Statue of Lapu-Lapu at Rizal Park

Lapu-Lapu, Datu (chieftain) of the Visayan-inhabited Mactan Island in the Philippines, is regarded as the first Filipino national hero. He is known as the first native of the archipelago to have resisted Spanish colonization. On the morning of 17 March 1521, Lapu-Lapu and the men of Mactan, armed with spears & kampilan, faced Spanish soldiers led by Portuguese Captain Ferdinand Magellan. Magellan & several of his men were killed in what would later be known as the Battle of Mactan. This statue was given as a gift to the Philippines from South Korea in 2005.
